“I can't really say anything about this that hasn't already been said. There's Norse mythology, cowboys, sibling relationships and tiny bit of romance. I can say that I really love how Emmy Laybourne takes a pretty common trope, Wild West adventure, and then totally flips it on its head, Norse girl and her family run from the law after she accidentally kills her father.
All in all its an interesting collection of tropes that for some odd reason, totally work. The realistic sibling relationship of 'I will kill you if you even look at me, to if you touch my brother/sister I will kill you' was refreshing and the relationship between Hanne and Owen isn't totally overwhelming and cutesy. It stays sort of harsh and discordant for most of the novel which was refreshing for a YA novel. Hanne is an awesome character that balances the idea of a proper woman vs. a powerful woman and how they can live in the same person. Admittedly the ending was a bit blase with a deus ex machina that sort of clears up the story nice and neat, but still a really, really fun refreshing read.”
