Beowulf by Beowulf Poet (Unknown) & John Lesslie Hall & digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Inspiring legendary authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, and C.S. Lewis, Beowulf tells the tale of the original lone hero facing impossible odds. It is the oldest complete piece of English literature and the basis for many of the heroic and fantastic stories still beloved to this day.

The titular Beowulf is a Scandinavian hero who must save his people, the Danes, from the supposedly invincible monster Grendel. Venturing deep into his lair, Beowulf not only slays the monster, but the monster's mother as well. It is at this point that the author both distinguishes himself from contemporary writers and establishes Beowulf's cultural legacy. For, instead of focusing on the hero's triumphant return and the splendor that must have accompanied it, the author jumps fifty years into the future to find Beowulf ascending to the throne of the Danes. Although ruling well, he presides over a world that is passing him by. The heroic nature of his youth is fading the bonds of loyal kinship that hold his kingdom together are unraveling. When a dragon descends on the realm, the king's challenge is not simply to defeat another monster, but to fight the march of time itself, a battle that will prove as futile for Beowulf as it will for all men before and all men since. Beowulf is a literary challenge from humanity's past to look critically at the myths that define civilization and a reminder that time comes for even the mightiest of warriors and kings alike.

About Beowulf Poet (Unknown)

For the sake of shorthand, many researchers and scholars refer to the author of Beowulf as simply "Beowulf Poet," although that is about all they agree on when it comes to the epic poem's true authorship. Some scholars, J.R.R. Tolkien among them, have argued that the work was of a singular author, while others assert that the manuscript was written and rewritten many times over, each new author reflecting the views and values of their time. While scholars do agree that the text dates somewhere between the 8th and 11th centuries, the precise date still remains a matter of fierce contention. The difference between 300 ancient years may seem ancillary to contemporary readers, but experts posit that the exact date is necessary to know whether this work is an idealized look at early Germanic culture or the product of a desire for writers of a later age to manufacture a glorious myth of their past.

John Lesslie Hall

J. Lesslie Hall was an American poet and scholar. He is best remembered for his translation of Beowulf, which since its publication in 1882 has remained a mainstay for professors, scholars, and everyday readers alike. His translation places an emphasis on alliteration to render more accurately the feeling of the Anglo-Saxon poetic style. Hall was a professor of English history and literature at the College of William & Mary in his native state of Virginia. He was the father of three sons and one daughter, and husband to Margaret Fenwick Farland.
