“This was an unexpected gem. As with all fairy tales there are elements of convenience but the love story is not the main component of the book. Honey-Bee and George grow up together and one fateful night (there's always a fateful night) walk out to the lake where George is taken prisoner by the beautiful Nixies of the lake and Honey-Bee is rescued/ taken prisoner by the Dwarves. Up to this point we have been given hints of what fearful creatures both the Nixies and the Dwarves are. Most of the tale centres on Honey-Bee's subsequent life with the Dwarves. It is a fairytale with some beautiful writing and a delight to read, even as an adult happening on it for the first time. The Queen of the Nixies wants to keep George as her husband and King Loc of the Dwarves wants Honey-Bee for his wife. The resolution of the story and King Loc's speech brought me to tears. "We love truly only those we love even in their weakness and their poverty. To forbear, to forgive, to console, that alone is the science of love."”
