“I have owned Becoming for years, and I finally picked it back up because I needed to feel a little joy while suffering through this arduous administration.
Michelle Obama is the definition of class, and uncovering her history through this memoir was immensely inspiring. Reading about her childhood, her family’s struggles, her perseverance, and her eventual rise to First Lady was an absolute joy. This is the kind of story we should be teaching our children: that no matter what circumstances life places in our path, it is important to persevere.
I was especially entertained by how little Michelle wanted Barack Obama to enter politics. At every stage, she seemed convinced that the next election would finally be the one he lost and that their family could return to a normal life. It was even more compelling to watch that reluctance transform into fear when, during his campaign for a second term, she briefly believed he might actually lose. She understood that her family needed its father, but she had also come to recognize that the country needed her husband even more.

About Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama served as First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Mrs. Obama started her career as an attorney at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she met her future husband, Barack Obama. She later worked in the Chicago mayor’s office, at the University of Chicago, and at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Mrs. Obama also founded the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an organization that prepares young people for careers in public service. She is the author of the #1 bestsellers The Light We Carry, Becoming, and American Grown. The Obamas currently live in Washington, D.C., and have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
