The sisters' wealthy father loses all his money when his merchant fleet is drowned in a storm, and the family moves to a village far away. Then the old merchant hears what proves to be a false report that one of his ships had made it safe to harbor at last, and on his sad, disappointed way home again he becomes lost deep in the forest and has a terrifying encounter with a fierce Beast, who walks like a man and lives in a castle. The merchant's life is forfeit, says the Beast, for trespass and the theft of a rose—but he will spare the old man's life if he sends one of his daughters: "Your daughter would take no harm from me, nor from anything that lives in my lands." When Beauty hears this story—for her father had picked the rose to bring to her—her sense of honor demands that she take up the Beast's offer, for "cannot a Beast be tamed?"

“New favorite book unlocked!! Beauty and the Beast hold such a special place in my heart and this retelling is my favorite.
It was just so magical and it had me giggling and kicking my feet♥️
I also LOVED the relationships she has with her sisters!!😭 and the love ughhh makes me emo.
And the magic system is so fun and ridiculous. The fact that as she accepted what she saw, she could ‘see’ more, was really cool and I think showed how her feelings were developing for the Beast and her surroundings.
It reminded me so much of Diana Wynne Jones’ Howls Moving Castle. I think Sophie and Beauty would be the best of unknowingly powerful witchy besties! And those are my fav parts of both of these books is that Beauty and Sophie are both so normal and ordinary (at least they view themselves that way) when in reality they are enough and even magical just being who they are✨
And I also really liked that not everything was answered and tied up in the end, though it was a happily ever after ending 🥹🫶🏻✨
I can see how Gail Carson Levine was influenced by this book in her book Ella Enchanted.
I def plan on rereading this and love that it’s a classic fairytale story.
Also! Greatheart is a PERFECT horse name!! ✨
Which makes me wonder if Miss Robin McKinley lefts hints as to what Belle names her lover… I bet it’s something Greek haha
Fave lines:
• “Her smile made us waifs, in the wilderness, feel that perhaps we weren’t utterly lost and forsaken after all.”
• “I am a Beast, and a Beast has no honor.””
