Beautiful You

By Chuck Palahniuk
Beautiful You by Chuck Palahniuk digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"A billion husbands are about to be replaced."

From the author of Fight Club, the classic portrait of the damaged contemporary male psyche, now comes this novel about the apocalyptic marketing possibilities of a new product that gives new meaning to the term "self-help."

Penny Harrigan is a low-level associate in a big Manhattan law firm with an apartment in Queens and no love life at all. So it comes as a great shock when she finds herself invited to dinner by one C. Linus Maxwell, a software mega-billionaire and lover of the most gorgeous and accomplished women on earth. After dining at Manhattan's most exclusive restaurant, he whisks Penny off to a hotel suite in Paris, where he proceeds, notebook in hand, to bring her to previously undreamed-of heights of gratification for days on end. What's not to like? This: Penny discovers that she is a test subject for the final development of a line of feminine products to be marketed in a nationwide chain of boutiques called Beautiful You. So potent and effective are these devices that women by the millions line up outside the stores on opening day and then lock themselves in their room with them and stop coming out. Except for batteries. Maxwell's plan for battery-powered world domination must be stopped. But how?

“I have no idea how to explain this book other than saying it is so stupid. Take that fondly or not. I went in completely blind, first book I’ve loaned from the library because I enjoyed fight club and invisible monsters but now I think I might be on a list somewhere. Palahniuk has a fun writing style but I have no idea what the vision was with this book. It got a lot better once I started just taking everything as a joke. Genuine warning that it does start with a rape scene so that was incredibly unpleasant. Very conflicted emotions. Also felt misogynistic? Very clearly written by a man who doesn’t really know what it’s like to be a woman. I don’t know! Definitely a book that I read.”
Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“I’ll start by staying, I understand the outrage some had about this book. It’s very graphic while being absolutely ridiculous. If it’s read from a surface level, most won’t enjoy this book. Definitely won’t be a read for everyone. I throughly enjoyed this read. Chuck’s writing is bold, he uses a very unique approach to explore the dark side of consumerism and how technology can alter relationships (at least that’s what I got from it). This was a very easy read to get through, the writing flows effortlessly and (despite the outrageous situations) it was challenging to put the book down.”
