Bandits

By Elmore Leonard
Bandits by Elmore Leonard digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“Almost unbearable suspense. Leonard has produced another winner.”
People

A wild ride with “the coolest, hottest writer in America” (Chicago Tribune), Bandits has everything Elmore Leonard fans love: non-stop thrills, unexpected twists and turns, unforgettable characters, and the most razor-sharp dialogue being rapidly exchanged anywhere in the crime fiction genre. Leonard stands tall among the all-time greats (John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain) and towers far above most of the writers currently plying the noir fiction trade. The master who created U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, currently of the hit TV series Justified, is at the top of his game, ensnaring readers in an ingenious plot hatched by a former jewel thief and a radical ex-nun to scam millions from a sadistic Nicaraguan colonel. In fact, the Philadelphia Inquirer says Bandits “may well be his best.” Read it and decide for yourself.

“Reformed ex-jewel thief Jack Delaney is trying to go straight. His brother-in-law, Leo, gave him a job to help him get back on his feet. The only problem is, the job is a literal dead end. See, Jack works in a New Orleans funeral home. Life seems pretty bleak, until Jack gets sent to a hospital for lepers to pick up a body. And then he realizes that the body isn't dead. The woman he's just picked up is the former unwilling girlfriend of a corrupt Nicaraguan Contra colonel who's come to New Orleans to raise money, supposedly for the cause against the Sandinistas. The woman's companion, a beautiful former Catholic nun named Lucy, knows that the colonel has other plans for the $5 million he's come to raise. Lucy has plans for the money that the colonel wants to raise: she wants to steal it, and she wants Jack's help. This is very much a book of its time, written in the late 1980s during the Nicaraguan civil war. If you've read any of Elmore Leonard's work, you know that you don't read him for the plot. You read him for the characters, and the tongue-in-cheek story-driving dialogue. This is a beach read and a fun tale, and vintage Elmore Leonard.”
