    “mega mixed bag for me”
“Oh my goodness, I loved these stories. There's a trend lately in science fiction and fantasy where it seems like everything has to be explained. Magic systems, feats of engineering, the vagaries of the weather, whatever is unusual about the world that's being built. And that's fine! But it doesn't always leave room for magic and nature to just be ... magical and natural. Big. Inexplicable. Mysterious. That's what I loved most about this collection of stories. There's so much scope for mystery in them. Most of these stories involved animals in some way. A slowly rotating planet where isolated nomadic peoples rely on horses to survive. A cat walking the length of Japan in search of the home of her fabled ancestor. An isolated alien who never speaks. An elderly dog and river of bees. They were all unique, sometimes disturbing, and frequently sad. But in the space freed up by not explaining exactly *how* and *why* each strange thing occurred, Johnson was able to explore the personal repercussions of living in a universe full of mystery. If you're looking for something in the line of Weir or Sanderson, don't look here. But if Ted Chiang, Vandana Singh, or Ruth Ozeki are your bread and butter, you'll adore these stories. CW: animal death, rape, violence, war”
