“4.5 🌟
It’s been close to 30 years since I read a Dean Kootnz Novel. I was obsessed with him in the late 80’s 90s, surpassing even Stephen king (a teen fan) . I couldn’t get enough of Koontz, owning all his books at the time. Then I read ‘Intensity’ and watched the mini series. Something was very wrong, disturbing and I was done. Moved onto Sue Grafton and Patrica Cornwell instead
However, Ashley Bell surprised me. It brought me back to why I like Koontz. It had everything I remembered of his novels - intrigue, suspense, captivating. Grabbing you from the beginning, with strong characters and interesting world building (somewhere between tangible and eldritch). A story full of easter ends and red herring - clues to get you lost in a maze of possibilities. And just when you felt it was getting too off-beat, the ‘shock of three’ is revealed, providing the perfect lure midway, hooking you in, enticing you to keep reading.
In hinge sight, I should have read it singularly (not alternating with 2 other books). A little lengthy I will admit (doesn’t help when you unintentionally borrow large print edition taking the page could to 778). However, when I felt the end approaching, the climax building to reveal all, I almost didn’t want to know. I even paused it at 87% (mindfully to finish the other 2 books thus giving Ashley Bell my full attention).
Here goes - the finally….
In the words of Bibi Blair, “What a load of horseshit.” Think Stephen king’s The Dark Half; imagine the The Twilight Zone 1983 movie and the little boy Anthony. Got it? (sorry for any spoilers).
As a writer, the imagination can do amazing things, they bring to life a world of possibilities for the readers that can feel so real. What if you discover you have the power to bring that world to life for real? A power so scary and dangerous that, at 6, measures were taken to have them forget? Then tragedy strikes and those memories, believed forgotten but just hidden, need to re-surface in order to save a live - yours!
I liked the ending, epilogue of sorts, that leaves us ‘waiting in a torment of imagination.’”
