The novel follows Martin Arrowsmith, an idealistic medical student who dreams of becoming a pure research scientist. After graduating, Martin's dedication to scientific integrity is tested when he travels to a plague-stricken Caribbean island with an experimental serum and he must choose between using the rigorous scientific method (using control groups) and saving lives immediately.
