Publisher Description

"Anthem" is a dystopian novella written by Ayn Rand and first published in 1938. Set in a future society where individuality and personal freedom have been eradicated, the story follows a young man named Equality 7-2521 (later renamed Prometheus) who dares to defy the strict collectivist norms of his society.

In this society, all aspects of life are controlled by the government, and individuality is suppressed in favor of the collective good. The use of the first-person plural pronoun "we" reflects the subjugation of the individual to the group.

Equality 7-2521 discovers a hidden underground tunnel from the Unmentionable Times (the pre-collectivist era) and begins to secretly conduct scientific experiments and pursue his own intellectual curiosity. Along the way, he falls in love with a woman named Liberty 5-3000 (later renamed Gaea), who shares his desire for individual freedom.

"Anthem" explores themes of individualism, freedom, and the power of the human spirit to resist oppression. It serves as a philosophical allegory for Rand's Objectivist philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of reason, individual rights, and laissez-faire capitalism.

While "Anthem" is shorter and less well-known than Rand's later works such as "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged," it remains a thought-provoking exploration of the nature of society and the individual.
