And Then? And Then? What Else?

By Daniel Handler & Lemony Snicket
And Then? And Then? What Else? by Daniel Handler & Lemony Snicket digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

You never love a book the way you love a book when you are ten.

Writing as Lemony Snicket, Daniel Handler has led several generations of young readers into that special and curious space of being hopelessly lost, and joyfully finding yourself, in the essential strangeness of literature. The wondrous and perilous journey of the Baudelaire orphans sprung from the author’s own path, from his childhood discovery of Baudelaire’s poetry through the countless peculiarities of his pursuit of a literary life—abject failure and startling success, breakthrough and breakdown, concordance and controversy—lit along the way by the books and culture he loved best.

At once a personal memoir and a literary exploration, a how-to book and a critical inquiry, a sequence of stories and a series of events, And Then? And Then? What Else? is a book not just for anyone curious about the creator of Lemony Snicket, but for anyone who loved books when they were a child, and still loves them now.

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“Reading Handlers prose is like returning home. Except this time, I return as a writer and not a bedraggled child reading under the covers by my cottage bedroom window with little light, A Series of Unfortunate Events, finding myself deeply represented and held with such resonating ache and awed defying grip between the terribly delightful engrossing pages. Although I will always be that bedraggled child. Fashioned out of all the things he likes, Snicket, aka Handler, delivers, to this writer at least, a fountain of witty and heartfelt ecstasy with each line and turn of phrase. Again, making me feel seen in a whole new way. I have been collecting magpie moments for as long as I can remember. Fragments of things that made my heart sing or stuck in my mind like glue to transform into some creative creature of some kind. To have Handler talk about this approach and the weaving that comes after, amidst so many other wonderful and brilliant things, was again a hand reaching out to say “you are not alone in this odd isolation.” I’ll be subsequently transforming, onto little notebooks like a magpie, underlined fragments, adding, inspired, grateful, and hopeful, to the pile of little things.”
“my review off of storygraph: being an author or an artist or a human being who wants to share the experience of humanity, put simply, feels like a line out of this book: “I just want you to want it too.” incredible.”
