And The Ocean Was Our Sky

By Patrick Ness & Rovina Cai
And The Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness & Rovina Cai digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Monster Calls comes a richly illustrated and lyrical tale, one that asks harrowing questions about power, loyalty, obsession, and the monsters we make of others.

With harpoons strapped to their backs, the proud whales of Bathsheba's pod live for the hunt, fighting in the ongoing war against the world of men. When they attack a ship bobbing on the surface of the Abyss, they expect to find easy prey. Instead, they find the trail of a myth, a monster, perhaps the devil himself...

As their relentless Captain leads the chase, they embark on a final, vengeful hunt, one that will forever change the worlds of both whales and men.

With the lush, atmospheric art of Rovina Cai woven in throughout, this remarkable work by Patrick Ness turns the familiar tale of Moby Dick upside down and tells a story all its own with epic triumph and devastating fate.

“"When you predict the future, when you do so strongly and you cling to it, how much of that future do you then cause to happen?" "Will the world end in darkness because it is foretold? Or because there will be those who believe it so strongly they will make it so?" Very interesting story, with a strong message that leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth and tons of questions. What is the devil we fight, and there is really one out there? Did we make it up to justify our violent nature? Are we destined for something great, or did we create our own narrative to feel better about our actions, about our nature? I really appreciated reading the story of Bathsheba narrated through her voice, and even though the first few chapters were slower compared to the rest of the book the writing style was beautiful and so worth the initial struggle, plus the illustrations added so much depth to the experience of reading this book. "You imagine the devil, you make the devil."”
