Publisher Description

On the dyson sphere Shenzhen, artificial intelligences rule and humans live in luxury, vying to be chosen as host bodies—called haruspices—for the next generation of AI, and thus be worshiped as gods.

Doctor Orfea Leung has come here to escape her past of mercenary violence. Krissana Khongtip has come here to reinvent herself from haunted spy to holy cyborg. But the utopian peace of Shenzhen is shattered when the haruspices begin committing suicide, and the pair are called upon to solve the mystery—and survive the silent war between machines . . .

“The book presents an interesting world, but is too short to explore it properly. The premise sounded intriguing, but halfway through interrogating the suicides, the story unfortunately lost me and became quite confusing. Unsurprisingly, it becomes extremely fast-paced once the action picks up. The low page count makes it hard to connect to the characters and care about them in a meaningful way. The surprisingly many sex scenes (not the worst, but they often felt out of place) take up space which could've been used for character development instead. Moreover, the writing can be difficult to parse at times, and it often reads like the author wanted to cram in as many "big" words as possible. I was open to discovering more of the world in the sequels, but after learning about the author's past online activities, I haven't the slightest desire to continue. :/”
“This was interesting! Very creepy tech dystopia stuff. Super fast paced, I finished it in a single night. This felt almost more like a teaser than a stand alone, but I'm excited to get into the series.”
