Slightly Smiling Face“3.75⭐️ This book feels like it took FOREVER! 😫 It was written well, had likable characters, and it jumpstarted a lot of research into spies of that time. I did A LOT of research because now, several decades after this era, we seem to be heading right back there. The sexism, racism, and classism has circles back around and it hits close to home. Some phrases they used in the book was not explained well, so looking things up will be necessary. I didn’t care much about the couple or the romance most if the time. Like, the two characters could have been any Black woman and any Irish male.I felt nothing for them as a couple except for as a plot device and romantic obstacle, I respect their union and want them to work out for the sake of the cause. And as a descendant of an African/Irish union during that time, I like to hope my ancestors met like this. If youre looking for intense espionage and spy stuff, youre not gonna get it until maybe 60% in. But that last 40%!!! Ate that up! That was the hunger, chemistry, passion, and action I’d been looking for.”
“This book is a historical romance but it is also very much a suspenseful. I really enjoyed the fmc Ellen. She was super strong and resilient and resourceful. She was so determined to her job as a spy with very little to distract from her purpose until she meets Malcom... Their love story was beautiful and spicy and full of danger. The story just kept getting derailed and I kept thinking this cannot be how they end. Overall it was very stressful lol. I did enjoy it very much.”
