“This is a beautifully descriptive book that occasionally sounds as if it were written by James Lipton, with lines like, "If you would see perfection, go look at the maple. It is like truth made into the form of a tree."
I found this perfect little hardcover a few years ago in a thrift store on a rainy day in Healdsburg. It still has the library card pocket marking it as property of Healdsburg Senior High School glued to the inside front cover. Whether it was stolen from that library or simply misplaced and then forgotten to be returned, I don't know, but I do know that I am grateful it ended up in my hands.
Platt's attention to and reverence for the details of the form and the identity of trees is touching. It makes me want to know them all--not only to be able to identify them by bark, leaf, and bud--but to know them individually. His descriptions of specific trees and their exact locations all over the country make me feel like he was personally acquainted with every tree in America. This book is a gem.”
