American Hippo

By Sarah Gailey
American Hippo by Sarah Gailey digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In 2017 Sarah Gailey made her debut with River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow, two action-packed novellas that introduced readers to an alternate America in which hippos rule the colossal swamp that was once the Mississippi River. Now readers have the chance to own both novellas in American Hippo, a single, beautiful volume.

Years ago, in an America that never was, the United States government introduced herds of hippos to the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This plan failed to take into account some key facts about hippos: they are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two.

By the 1890s, the vast bayou that was once America's greatest waterway belongs to feral hippos, and Winslow Houndstooth has been contracted to take it back. To do so, he will gather a crew of the damnedest cons, outlaws, and assassins to ever ride a hippo. American Hippo is the story of their fortunes, their failures, and his revenge.

At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Expressionless Face“Huge fan of the idea, not so much the execution. Wish the plot of the main novellas were more thought out; I was left scratching my head at both the heroes’ AND the villain’s plans in each story. Characters were diverse on paper, which is good, but didn’t always feel very rounded or thought out. They weren’t flat, but they could’ve used a lot more depth. I also wanted more world building, since it’s partly an alternative historical fiction story, but it didn’t seem like much was different other than having wild and domestic hippos in America during the time period it took place in. I would’ve liked to have seen more of the impact it had on America as a whole. All in all, I think I needed more writing from these stories. I wish they were a little longer so the author could’ve explored more interesting ideas, and well-thought out plans for their characters. The overarching story seemed a little too big, and too crowded with characters for shorter novellas, and I would’ve enjoyed if the plot and number of characters were scaled back some, or written longer to fully articulate everything happening in the story.”

Thinking Face“Soooo. This had a ridiculous, irresistible premise: an alternative history in which America decided to import hippos to ranch in the Louisiana bayous. Thus we have a Tarentino/spaghetti western/steampunky mashup, with a diverse crew of desperados, contract killers and cons pulling off a big caper while riding yes, hippos. This book was too novellas in one, and that is my main complaint. The characters are colorful and fun, (and delightfully queer), but there is no real depth to them. Also-the plotting was disappointing. There are villains threatening to our antiheroes, but they were easily dispatched, and the heists were never at an Oceans Eleven caliber. And for all it’s oddball conceits, the world building was kind of ho hum. I give it an A for originality, a C for everything else.”
