Orange Is the New Black meets Walter Dean Myer’s Monster in this gritty, twisty, and haunting debut by Tiffany D. Jackson about a girl convicted of murder seeking the truth while surviving life in a group home.

Mary B. Addison killed a baby.

Allegedly. She didn’t say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

There wasn’t a point to setting the record straight before, but now she’s got Ted—and their unborn child—to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary’s fate now lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“This book is a ride! Perhaps Tiffany D. Jackson's grittiest outing, Allegedly follows Mary who was tried at the ripe age of nine for murdering a baby. Her life is now in absolute shambles as she lives in a horrifying group home filled with girls who are trying to kill each other 99% of the time. When Mary herself finds out she's pregnant, the events of her freeing herself from her hellhole life and getting herself exonerated are set in motion. As always, the reader always feels like they're living everything alongside the protagonist and really getting into their head. The trademark "did This really happen or did the character omagine it" comes into play. And omfg I was not prepared for the last 10 pages! Like dammnn. It's so hard to organise my thoughts for this. I think this really did a good job of calling to light the horrid conditions child criminals have to face in the aftermath. How horrible the prison conditions are and the abusive reality of group homes. And how vulnerable and unprotected children are.”
