“What would you expect of a hard boiled crime book written in 1960, set in Harlem dealing with gay male prostitutes? Let me break it to you, the gender politics are problematic! That being said I bet you lay this against other books written at the same time and this one is better than most. Chester Himes is a dynamite crime writer and this continuation of his Harlem series is dynamite. Im not the first to say this, but his characters are fantastically drawn and his eye for detail and description is top notch.”

About Chester Himes
After arriving on the American literary scene with novels of scathing social protest like If He Hollers Let Him Go and The Lonely Crusade, Chester Himes created a pioneering pair of dangerously charming African-American sleuths, Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, who attempt to maintain some kind of order in a series of violent and funny page-turners.
