“This collection would be worth the read based on the principal of it alone, but it’s also an extremely well-crafted anthology filled with voices that we don’t get to hear enough from in “popular” literature. Anybody who likes diverse reads, wants to read about characters like themselves that rarely get the spotlight, and has a love of folklore and fairytales will love this collection. Personally, my favorites were as follows: “Roja” by Anna-Marie McLemore, an invigorating tale of Mexican culture crossed with Little Red Riding Hood; “Every Shade of Red” by Elliot Wake, a new and heartwarming take on Robin Hood; and “Burnt Umber” by Mackenzi Lee, a story that I still have trouble explaining outside of ‘yes, good, more of this.’ READ THIS BOOK. We need more books like this.”
““All out” is a collection of short stories each telling the tale of a queer teenager at different points in history. Although the stories varied in quality in regards to grammar and clarity, each story was paced well and didn’t seem to drag on. In addition each historical setting provides a rich environment to be explored through a queer perspective. Highlights of the book Include ‘New Year’ by Melinda Lo and ‘Every Shade of Red’ by Elliot Wake, among others. In certain stories the authors tended to sacrifice a comprehensive plot for flowery language, but this is not a problem for most of the book. Overall, this was a very enjoyable read and I would highly recommend.”
