THE NEW YORKER ● VOGUE ● FINANCIAL TIMES ● OPRAH DAILY ● VULTURE ● VOX
The New York Times bestselling author returns with an irreverently sexy, tender, hilarious and surprising novel about a woman upending her life
“A frank novel about a midlife awakening, which is funnier and more boldly human than you ever quite expect . . . nothing short of riveting.” —Vogue
“All Fours has spurred a whisper network of women fantasizing about desire and freedom. . . . It’s the talk of every group text."—The New York Times
“All Fours possessed me. I picked it up and neglected my life until the last page, and then I started begging every woman I know to read it as soon as possible.” —The Cut
A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, checks into a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in an entirely different journey.
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive.

“While there are things I did like about the story, talking about aging in women and how it can be quite anxiety inducing, but also hopeful and empowering, there were a lot of things I did not like. The main character can be a little bratty and almost spoiled and childlike. It was a little strange at times and I've read some pretty gnarly books. I think sometimes it just felt a little unrealistic.”
“This one takes you through a woman's journey to tear apart and reconstruct her missionary-position-style life while sheltering her child and husband (for the most part) from the fallout. Instead of the normal 20-something POV of self-discovery, it's a 45 year old trying to sort out her sexuality and come to terms with her impending perimenopause. Of course she has an interesting, artsy career, and doesn't struggle with day to day life. Even she can admit she has it pretty good, but like us all, she has some trauma and some unanswered questions about her sexuality and what it means to be fulfilled. 3.75 due to some of the writing choices, though I thought the main character (nameless) felt real and raw”
““Then it became 3:01, and the rest of my life…”
I was talking to a kid at work this week, and we were talking about how she takes ballet lessons and I told her I used to take ballet. She showed me her best arabesque, and asked to see mine. I told her I hadn’t done one in about seven years, and she said to me “you can always change that.” She was right.
“Every day is Tuesday,” but every day could be any day, really. It’s your time to make of your desire what you will.”
