Publisher Description

Kate Heartfield's Alice Payne Arrives is the story of a time traveling thief turned reluctant hero in this science fiction adventure.

A disillusioned major, a highwaywoman, and a war raging across time.

It’s 1788 and Alice Payne is the notorious highway robber, the Holy Ghost. Aided by her trusty automaton, Laverna, the Holy Ghost is feared by all who own a heavy purse.

It’s 1889 and Major Prudence Zuniga is once again attempting to change history—to save history—but seventy attempts later she’s still no closer to her goal.

It’s 2016 and . . . well, the less said about 2016 the better!

But in 2020 the Farmers and the Guides are locked in battle; time is their battleground, and the world is their prize. Only something new can change the course of the war. Or someone new.

Little did they know, but they’ve all been waiting until Alice Payne arrives.

“If "This is How You Lose a Time War" is all vibes, low plot, then this book is all plot, low vibes. Did I enjoy it? Yeah. Will I remember it? Probably not. I thought the explanation of the war, the misguided, and the time jumps were all really interesting. Unfortunately, I also thought the characterization was really lacking. Yes, this is a short book, and yes it's part of a series, but that doesn't mean the characters need to feel flat. Look at murderbot if you want a short book with compelling character work. At the end of the book, when the two women were expressing their love for one another and the sentiment, "I'd love you in every timeline," was shared, I couldn't get myself to care. They didn't have any relationship development the whole time. So sure I guess that might be true? But I definitely don't feel it. We're experiencing emotional sentiments without the earned emotion. I'll continue on in the series, but hesitantly.”
“Thoroughly enjoyable. I need. to. know. more. about this world! Reread: November 27, 2019 This is a fun book, but I’m not that interested in Alice and Jane. I’m way more interested in the Farmers and the Misguided and their time war. I want to hear more about that part. Reading the second book now. We’ll see how much more I get.”
