Alice

By Christina Henry
Alice by Christina Henry digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the national bestselling author of Ghost Tree comes a mind-bending novel inspired by the twisted and wondrous works of Lewis Carroll...

In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo the screams of the poor souls inside.

In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood...

Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago.

Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful. And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.

Expressionless Face“i loved the Disney twisted series they did a while back, and i hoped that this would follow a similar concept. however, the writing was simply AWFUL, like this was something i would’ve written in a GCSE paper, not for a publication. this author has a massive problem, and that is, she thinks all her readers are incompetent. there wasn’t anything that i had to work out, no satisfying moment of realisation that i had been right the whole time, or that i was being strung along. everything is painfully obvious, and over-explained. this book could’ve easily been 100 page short story, and it probably would’ve had more effect. from long-winded monologues that further the story in no way, to anti-climactic moments that should’ve been longer and fleshed out. i’ve half been thinking that this was the initial manuscript and they submitted it by accident; it feels unfinished and rushed. like when they go to these big bosses (Cheshire, Walrus, and Rabbit, i think there was someone else, but i can’t remember) i can get behind the occasional bad written moment; but when the book is plagued with it, there’s just no coming back. every cliche in the book was in this book. the character development was forced and unnatural, the narrator was third-person, who mostly focused on Alice, but when convenient also provided Hatchers. this book is a mess, in conclusion. this isn’t even scratching the surface. for such an interesting premise, Henry botched it in every way possible.”
