“He’s done it again, i’ve recently grown a loving towards Suede having them played around me during my upbringing. Brett Anderson is an influence like no other. Such a fantastic writer as well as songwriter. Delving into the true darkness of a band that was transcended beyond our possible beliefs was the best part of all of this.”

I always go back to this and Coal Black Mornings annually. Afternoons With The Blinds Drawn is the book Anderson said he wouldn't write, but I'm so glad he did. It's a character study, more than a memoir. Similarly to how Coal Black Mornings had its Inception as a character study of Anderson's late father. This time it's a study of Anderson himself, he views himself as a specimen and picks apart the fragments of his psyche during Suede's original 1990s heyday, and the impact of fame, the pressures of the music industry, and how it led him to justify self-destructive behaviours as "just part of the job". There are times you can sense him holding back, and it must be tough to relive a lot of these moments. Anyone looking for juicy details about the already over-documented falling out with Bernard Butler can look elsewhere (David Barnett's biography is a good start), as Anderson handles this with grace and looks more into the causes rather than the ins and outs of it. It must be shitty to have had a falling out with a friend and for 30+ years it's all anyone asks you about.”
