Afterglow Reviews

3.5
“This is the only book that has made me cry in the same short story as there is a sentient furby named Gina, and that alone earns this five stars. But there are many other things besides that as well. If you struggle to imagine another world besides this one, read this and you’ll see many of them.”
“I got this book because it called out to me from the title sentence “Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors”. As an environmentalist born, raised, and living in an island and overall gardening enthusiast, I constantly worry about the future, the state of climate change and the way we humans (specifically the west powers) constantly abuse nature, animals, and the planet for our own gain and “profit”. This book contains several fantastical short stories from different cultural perspectives, all critical of human greed, but also beautifully hopeful in its creative exploration of innovative ways we humans can utilize our intelligence and resources to overcome the consequences of our greed. The multiple stories has both comforted and saddened me, left me feeling hopeful for the future in a bittersweet way. I believe the most important lesson I’ve found in this book, one that isn’t particularly new but worth mentioning every single time, is that we humans as a collective can only hope to reach a fruitful and peaceful future with the planet and ourselves if we connect back to our ancestral indigenous roots. Connecting back to nature seems to be the most simple and obvious solution. The only reason I don’t give it a full 5 stars is that a couple of the stories were a bit confusing to keep up with, but this passionate message was always there. Highly recommend for those environmentally conscious!!”
“Some of them used language techniques unfamiliar to native English speakers, but they are all worth their time (none of them are more than 20 pages). The final one was my favorite”
