After Dark with Roxie Clark

By Brooke Lauren Davis
After Dark with Roxie Clark by Brooke Lauren Davis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the author of The Hollow Inside comes a twisty, thought-provoking YA thriller about grief, family, and what happens when true crime hits a little too close to home.

Roxie Clark has seen more dead bodies than your average seventeen-year-old. As a member of the supposedly-cursed Clark family, most of her ancestors have met tragic ends, including her own mother. Instead of fearing the curse, however, Roxie has combined her flair for performance and her gruesome family history into a successful ghost tour. But her tour never covers the most recent body she's seen-her sister Skylar's boyfriend, Colin Riley, found murdered in a cornfield.

A year after the murder, Roxie's desperate to help Skylar find closure and start to heal. Instead, Skylar becomes fixated on finding the killer. As the sisters dig into what really happened, they discover that more than one person has been lying about that night. And the closer they get to the truth, the more Roxie starts to wonder if some scary stories might be better left untold. Brooke Lauren Davis offers another thought-provoking and eerily satisfying tale, perfect for fans of Kara Thomas and Cruel Summer.

“Okay, so imagine being seventeen and having a family tree that looks like it was designed by a goth decorator on a caffeine high. That’s Roxie Clark’s life in a nutshell. She’s part of the Clark clan, notorious for their tragic endings and suspiciously high death rate. Instead of getting creeped out by her family’s grim legacy, Roxie’s like, “Hey, let’s turn this into a business!” and starts a ghost tour. Because, naturally, when life gives you a cursed family, you make a killer tour (pun totally intended). https://images.gr-assets.com/hostedimages/1723668692ra/35855166.gif But things go from spooky to seriously messed up when Roxie’s sister, Skylar, loses her boyfriend, Colin, to a murder that would make even the most seasoned true crime junkie squirm. A year later, Skylar’s not exactly in the mood for ghost stories. No, she’s obsessed with finding out who did Colin in, and Roxie—being the good sister—dives into the case like she’s auditioning for a detective role in a soap opera. After Dark with Roxie Clark is a twisty, atmospheric read that keeps you guessing and occasionally laughing at the absurdity of it all. Roxie’s journey through family curses, ghost tours, and murder investigations is both a thrilling and darkly comedic ride. The plot twists are well-executed, and the characters are so vividly drawn that you almost forget they’re all part of a story that involves a suspicious number of dead bodies. The book has a bit of everything: suspense, family drama, and enough ghostly lore to make you question your own family tree. Roxie’s witty narration and her struggle with the messy reality of her life versus her ghostly side hustle make for a fun and engaging read. Sure, some of the plot developments might feel like they’ve been borrowed from the "How to Write a Mystery Novel" handbook, but Davis's fresh spin on the genre keeps things entertaining. In short, if you’re looking for a thriller that’s got just the right mix of spooky, witty, and emotionally satisfying, this book is your ticket to a rollercoaster of a read. Just don’t be surprised if you start looking at your own family tree a little differently—who knows what secrets might be lurking there?”
Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“I love how you would honestly never expect the murder to be it. It was so hevey on her though. my only real complaint about the book is ot felt like it was switching pov's.”
