“🖤 Please heed the content warning tags listed at the end🖤 When I first heard of this story, no one would actually tell me what it was about or give content warnings other than: “It’s grotesque, you don’t want to read it. Stay away from it” Naturally and unfortunately, I have the curiosity of a goddamn cat, so I scoured the internet for hours trying to find a copy I could read. I’m pretty used to reading truly horrifying stuff, yet I was surprised to find that the warnings for this were entirely justified. Despite this, Elizabeth Massie is by no means a bad author. In fact, I’d say she’s a FANTASTIC author. I’m just curious what drove her to write this. I stumbled upon this short story through a complicated grape vine of books and Internet forums that hide from a majority of the public eye. It comes from an anthology series called “Still Dead.” Sometimes when I see people freaking out over horror stories and I go to check them out, the horror within is extremely tame and I get disappointed. While horror is subjective, this could also be due to the fact that I read horror regularly and am simply used to topics that others may be seeing for the first time. However, people were definitely right about this southern gothic tale. It’s haunting, and horrifying in ways the English language simply can’t describe. It lingers and festers in the brain like a parasite that one can’t be rid of. Since it’s a short story, I feel I can’t give a proper review without spoiling (The content warning tags I provided may still spoil it). So I’ll say this: Woman lives with her abusive mother in law during a Zombie Apocalypse that will make you want to puke. Also, this short story got adapted into a short film. Despite how I needed several days to process what I read after this, I am morbidly curious about the rest of the stories in the anthology series it came from. Curiosity killed the cat, I guess. 🖤 PLEASE heed the content warning tags🖤 Forced necrophilia, forced breeding, abusive situations, gruesome death, grotesque depictions of dead bodies. I believe that may be all.”
