Publisher Description

Longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature!

From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Shatter Me series comes a powerful, heartrending contemporary novel about fear, first love, and the devastating impact of prejudice.

It’s 2002, a year after 9/11. It’s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped.

Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. She’s tired of the rude stares, the degrading comments—even the physical violence—she endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. So she’s built up protective walls and refuses to let anyone close enough to hurt her. Instead, she drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother.

But then she meets Ocean James. He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies her—they seem to come from two irreconcilable worlds—and Shirin has had her guard up for so long that she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to let it down.

“TLDR; too many good ingredients that did not make sense together, it was unrefined. Set in a post 911 America, the story talks about a young Iranian girl Shirin and how she fell in love with one of her classmates, a white boy named Ocean. There are very few people of colour, even less Muslims in the school. So someone like Shirin who wears a headscarf becomes a very easy target for constant bullying. While I thought this story had the potential to be a really moving tale about bodily consent, xenophobia and bullying, it ended up falling really flat for me. Focusing more on the romance and dialogue between Shirin and Ocean, rather than the actual challenges and growth that comes with facing racism on a daily basis. The character was extremely negative, had a one track mind, and refused to see beyond her bubble. While I understand she was a high school character, her naïveté was quite honestly so cringe to read about. In the end, the main character understands that her worldview has been very negative and fuelled by anger. She realises she has pigeonholed everyone in the same way that everyone has been pigeon-holing her. But I thought this realisation came suddenly and lacked any character growth. It was just a thought but not backed by a change in action. There was no progress between her relationship with her parents. There were some characters that were added to the mix but served no purpose. She didn’t make any truly meaningful friendships until perhaps the last chapter. In essence, this character didn’t actually experience growth. It was more like the author wanted to slap on some paragraphs to show her growth in the last chapter. The flow of the novel was really weird. Again, it had amazing potential to be a story of how not everyone who is modestly dressed or Muslim must behave a certain way, that everybody is multifaceted, with different beliefs. But it just felt really shallow because it was focused on the romance instead of the truly important topics.”
