A Turn of Light
By Julie E. CzernedaPublisher Description
“A warm and intricate fantasy opus.” —Charlaine Harris
“A gorgeous creation.” —Anne Bishop
A restless young woman longs to see the world beyond her pastoral valley in this fantasy series debut with all the trappings of a whimsical fairy tale.
Jenn Nalynn, the miller's daughter, wants to travel, to seek what's missing in her life. Not that she's sure what that is, but since this summer began, she's felt a strange and powerful yearning. She's certain she'll find what she needs—if only she can leave the valley.
But she must not, for the valley is more than it seems. Long ago, a cataclysm of misused power pinned Marrowdell to the Verge, a place of wild magic, home to dragons and even stranger creatures. Should Jenn leave Marrowdell, she will pull the worlds asunder.
To prevent this, powers from the Verge have sent a guard to watch over her, a disgraced dragon named Wisp, Jenn’s invisible playmate. Wisp's duty is to keep Jenn in Marrowdell—by her death, if he must.
But time is running out. What Jenn unknowingly feels is the rise of the Verge's magic within her, a magic that will threaten her and those she loves. Worse, this summer will end with a Great Turn, and strangers seeking power at any cost have come to Marrowdell to try to force an opening into the Verge, to the ruin of all.

“This book had me from the first two sentences in. From there I was pretty enthralled in the book and definitely enjoyed myself throughout despite the slow pace of the story. Everything about this book is lovely. The page breaks when perspectives switch are marked by drawings of sunflower heads, roses, or thistles (I think they are thistles?).
If anyone wants a book that has wonderful descriptions of the setting/the world around it or wants a cozy read with some adventure thrown in, this is the book for you. Especially if fantasy is your thing. An example of the description in the book page 185: “The mist cleared, replaced by tendrils of steam where sunbeams found their way through broken cloud and began to dry the sodden road.”
The characters were well rounded and felt developed. I wish the names of the characters with descriptions of who they are had been at the front of the book rather than the end because I didn’t realize and could have used that to reference the characters and better keep the more minor ones straight.
The author did a wonderful job developing the world and things were slowly revealed throughout the book which helped keep everything interesting. I enjoyed the detail put into the story but at the same time I can definitely say I felt like the book was too long. I still enjoyed it though.
Favorite quotes page 208
The sisters silently pondered the significance of tingling as they watched Riss…Peggs coughed. “Go on.” “What?” ”You know what. Was Bannan more tingly or less?” “What kind of question is that?” Jenn rolled her eyes. “Tingly is…tingly.”
Examp of Wainn being great:
“You found the way no others dared.,” he whispered, his breath warm on her neck. “Take it again when the time comes, Jenn Naylynn. Marrowdell will show you. Take it again and be your magic. Be brave and of good heart.” He lightly kissed her ear, then pulled away. “We believe in you.”
All in all, I highly recommend this book for any fantasy lover who wants more of a cozy read with some great characters and adventure included. Marrowdell is magical and wonderful. This book should definitely be more well known. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.”

“I absolutely loved this book. It is the first high fantasy book I’ve read probably since high school. The author does a great job of creating a new and fantastical world. This novel definitely tugs at the heartstrings at various times. Follow Jenn as she discovers who she is and who she’s meant to be. It’s a tale of growing up and being mindful of the consequences of our actions.
The only con I have were the chapters were fairly lengthy. Most were 50+ pages and some almost a 100. These chapters were a little daunting to get through. Otherwise a great read.”
