Slightly Smiling Face“Preston: a gentleman and a scholar. I right away vibed with the writing but then a little farther into the book, I didn’t. It was a weird mixture of loving it but finding it a little off. Probably because some of the writing feeling repetitive, like her swallowing of a pill dry. I loved the bits of the Fairy King story at the beginning of each chapter so, I continued, invested, and by the middle and especially toward the end I got it. It felt like a nice little story about survivors of abuse and feminism. The one thing I truly appreciated was the delicate way the growing romance budded and Preston’s handling of her trauma and her feelings.”
Slightly Smiling Face“I am unsure if it is because I haven’t ever read much ‘fantasy’ or dark academia, or if this is just how the story lends itself but I did find the book a little tricky to get into. However the how the characters were written and how they progress did keep me hooked even when the storyline itself got a little slower. Overall an interesting read that I did enjoy, I recommend waiting until you have some hours free to really get into it in one sitting.”
Loudly Crying Face“A Study in Drowning was a hard read. The themes and explorations of what it is to have girlhood, and how it can be marred, shaped, twisted by misogyny and violence, were done with a beautifully light touch. I recognised it, I felt it. There was a long period where I had to stop reading because it was just too close. The setting brought all the most wonderfully bleak, dangerous and vast gothic classic to the core. To read this story feels like you are standing in a downpour. The symbolism was thick and evocative. There is so much to like, and I would hesitate to say my rating is because I was made uncomfortable - certainly that is actually one of the points of this story. It would not be the story it is if it didn't make me squirm, look away, not want to be reminded. However, I did find the writing style plodding - there are times where the need to have a sweet, romantic plot feels very at odds with the main action. You need both, but it interrupts the pacing. I think I feel that the book simply isn't large or long enough to really explore everything it wants to - and is that really a fault? There's a surfaceness, like the words are actually a shiny film ontop of the actual depth of memory and meaning the author was conveying. I often felt there was action I missed or leaps of logic where I wasn't fully convinced enough by the characters to give them the benefit of suspense of disbelief. Or paragraphs, particularly exploring the main characters feelings, that I felt I had already read several times. I think this book is good, it is very worth the read - the enticement of the rich exploration and experiments in depicting Welsh folklore is reward enough. I did feel I was Drowning. I did feel. I just wanted more. But there was safety in the once-removed quality of the prose, and perhaps I should be thankful for that. That she didn't let us drown.”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“This was an amazing read, I was hooked from start to finish! Her ability to make you connect with Effy and Preston was beautiful. The way that sometimes the good guy is just THAT an actual good guy! There were times where I wasn’t sure who Effy could fully trust but by the end Preston showed he was willing to go the distance to help her. Overall such a great read, I wish I could forget it so I could read it for the first time all over again.”
