“Exquisite and devastating. It won’t fail to move you.” —Shelley Parker-Chan, #1 bestselling author of She Who Became the Sun

Inspired by the legend of Xishi, one of the famous Four Beauties of Ancient China, A Song to Drown Rivers is an epic novel steeped in myth about womanhood, war, sacrifice, and love against all odds as the fate of two kingdoms hangs in a delicate balance.

Her beauty hides a deadly purpose.

Xishi’s beauty is seen as a blessing to the villagers of Yue—convinced that the best fate for a girl is to marry well and support her family. When Xishi draws the attention of the famous young military advisor, Fanli, he presents her with a rare opportunity: to use her beauty as a weapon. One that could topple the rival neighboring kingdom of Wu, improve the lives of her people, and avenge her sister’s murder. All she has to do is infiltrate the enemy palace as a spy, seduce their immoral king, and weaken them from within.

Trained by Fanli in everything from classical instruments to concealing emotion, Xishi hones her beauty into the perfect blade. But she knows Fanli can see through every deception she masters, the attraction between them burning away any falsehoods.

Once inside the enemy palace, Xishi finds herself under the hungry gaze of the king’s advisors while the king himself shows her great affection. Despite his gentleness, a brutality lurks and Xishi knows she can never let her guard down. But the higher Xishi climbs in the Wu court, the farther she and Fanli have to fall—and if she is unmasked as a traitor, she will bring both kingdoms down.

"Stunning and heart-rending." —Chloe Gong, #1 bestselling author of Immortal Longings

A Song to Drown Rivers Reviews

3.5
Loudly Crying Face“This wasn’t a bad book but I was disappointed. I thought the story was straight forward. I wish the author would’ve taken more fictional liberties. Because none of this felt believable or persuasive. I felt absolutely no chemistry between Xi Shi and Fan Li or Fuchai. She didn’t come off as a seductress at all. I absolutely loved researching and learning this was a retelling but I don’t think it did the real story justice. It may have been the way the narrator read the book. All the characters fell flat except Fuchai. No one really had personality. I didn’t like that the author deviated from what really happened to Fuchai but loved she chose the more tragic way out. I truly think that’s what happened. This book wasn’t fantasy at all, except the last two chapters. What was the sickness that ailed Xi Shi?”
“Hmmm okay. I took me ages to finish this. Unknown reason why. I just started it, put it down for a few months (lowley a year) and then crushed in one shift at work. Crazy work by me. The beginning was a little slow, but me and Fanli are like this 👯. Thats my little homie. I understand him through and through. This years theme apparently is war and after all the books I've read, war is a pointless endeavor and fought only for the betterment for kings and the rich (ive said this a million times before). I did however have hope our girl would've made it out unscathed (mentally and phyiscally) but of course... tis war and nothing reallg comes out unscathed. All in all, good book, written well, nice plot. (why was Fuchai so fucking funny? my favorite vampire diaries character was Kai and Klaus. can you tell?)”
“OKAY. Objectively the way how Ann wrote this book is utterly devastating and beautiful. The plot is heavy on love story but the plot was not compromised. THOUGH MY HEART ACHES SO MUCH LIKE WTH!? IS THAT REALLY NECESSARY?????😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭”
