Publisher Description

Princess Azmei of Tamnen doesn't like the decision she's facing: marry Vistaren of Amethir or let her kingdom's war go on with no end in sight. How much of herself must she sacrifice to keep her people safe?

Crown Prince Vistaren Doth'Mara isn't exactly thrilled about their upcoming marriage either, particularly since he likes boys instead of girls. Torn between duty and desire, he doesn't know what to do.

Privateer Arama Dzornaea's mission is simple: she must transport the prince to meet his contracted bride. As captain of the Dawn Star, she thinks she can handle anything—even her unwelcome attraction to the prince's personal bodyguard, General Lozarr Algot.

Princess, pirate, and prince are sailing to meet on neutral territory, but all is not as it seems. Azmei's new friend, Orya, is more dangerous than she looks. Prince Vistaren has secrets of his own. Arama's unruly stormwitch might bring the whole ship down. And there are those who will stop at nothing to prevent the alliance between Tamnen and Amethir.

There's a storm on the horizon, and its shadow is growing to cover the whole world.

A Song of Storm and Shadow Reviews

3.0
“3.5/5 ⭐ Stephanie Cain's "A Song of Storm and Shadows" is a lovely pirate fantasy. While there is magic in it, it is used for more decoration than anything else. The story follows Azmei, a princess of Tamnen, and Vistaren, a prince of Amethir. The two are to be Wed to broker peace. The book follows the perspective of 5 characters. Azemi, Lo, Arma, Vistaren, and Orya. Each one having their own motives and stories. The good: This is a cozy tale, if nothing else. The characters are complex, even if the story is not. The message "duty above all else" comes to mind for this. Many of the characters struggle with their duty against what they wish to have. Ultimately it comes down to which is more important for some of them. The bad: This is not a high-seas adventure despite what the first few chapters would have you consider. The magic is not in high regard here. Only one person has the ability to use magic and it is no doubt disappointing that more is not included. The bottom line: This is a good book that blurs the line of duty, being true to oneself, and good fashion espionage. The book series would be something to consider especially for those who enjoyed Tomes and Tea and Legends and Latte. I will be picking up the second book myself!”

About Stephanie A. Cain

Stephanie A. Cain writes epic & urban fantasy. She is the author of Stormsinger, Stormshadow, Stormseer, The Midwinter Royal, and Sow the Wind. She grew up in Indiana, where much of her urban fantasy is set.

She spends her work time at a small museum doing historical research, giving tours of a Victorian man-cave, and serving as a one-woman IT department. A proud crazy cat lady, she is happily owned by Eowyn, Strider, and Eustace Clarence Scrubb.

In her free time, she enjoys hiking (except for the spiders), bird-watching, and reading. She enjoys organizing things and visits office supply stores for fun. She owns way more movie scores and fountain pens than she can actually afford.
