Publisher Description

"He’s gone…"

When his daughter Samantha calls in the dead of night, John Rebus knows it’s not good news. Her husband has been missing for two days.

Rebus fears the worst – and knows from his lifetime in the police that his daughter will be the prime suspect.

He wasn’t the best father – the job always came first – but now his daughter needs him more than ever.  But is he going as a father or a detective?

As he leaves at dawn to drive to the windswept coast – and a small town with big secrets – he wonders whether this might be the first time in his life where the truth is the one thing he doesn’t want to find…

A thrilling new Rebus novel about crime, punishment, and redemption, from the Edgar Award-winning "genius" of the genre (Lee Child, bestselling author of the Jack Reacher series)

“Oh Rebus. Even if it's never quite spoken, this is a 70+ year-old grandfather trying to act at times like a man 30-40 years younger. Instead of helping with the murder of Salman bin Mahmoud in Edinburgh, the case Siobhan Cox and eventually Malcolm Fox are investigating, Rebus is racing off to the north of Scotland to support his daughter when her partner goes missing. It's not a real spoiler to say that somehow the cases will overlap, or that there will be several false solutions before everything clicks and the killer(s) get caught. Rebus' relationship with Samantha is... strained, to put it politely. She doesn't even want him there, but he finds a room in a local pub and sticks around to not only solve what happened but also build a bridge to his daughter and granddaughter. It's nice to see him growing! My only question is how many more contrived ways will Rankin use to insert Rebus into the action? I can't wait for book 24 to find out.”
