“A perfect small town romance. Likable and relatable characters.”
“This book is a sweet, clean, contemporary romance with fun summer vibes!
My favorite part about the book was how big of a heart Maura, the protagonist, has. She is always open to helping those in need, even if it inconveniences herself. She can see the value in a grumpy twelve-year -old boy and a half-blind donkey in turn.
I loved how this book talked about how it is important to exercise your morals in every facet of life, including to whom you choose to sell your property.
I enjoyed seeing the different relationships between the characters. I loved watching Theo's relationship with his son develop and how Maura and Maddie always supported each other in their business.
There were a few things I didn't love about this book.
My least favorite scenes were the ones where all of the main characters got their fortunes read. I don't like fortune telling, so it rubbed me the wrong way a bit.
I also felt like a few things about the characters should've been chosen more carefully. For example, it didn't seem like it mattered much at all that Theo, the love interest, was a doctor. I generally prefer it when those important things about the characters' identity are essential to the story's plot.
Overall, while this book had several cute scenes, it wasn't the best book I've ever read. All the same, it might be better suited for a reader who loves sweet romances with incredible summer feels and interesting character relationships!
I received an advance reader copy from the author. My thoughts are my own. A positive review was not required.”
“Janice Carter’s connections between people shine in her latest wholesome, small-town romance, A Small Town Fourth of July.
You’ll love a chance to visit Maple Glen, Vermont with Theo Danby and his 12-year-old son, Luke. Theo is an emergency room doctor on six weeks stress leave from his job and is returning with his son who he barely knows to (1) reconnect and (2) take care of his inheritance. As you can imagine, things are awkward between Theo and Luke. Carter has captured Luke’s boredom and frustration as well as Theo’s struggle to put the lid on his nostalgia and connect with him. Thrown into the conflict is an ex-wife who has burdened her son with a difficult choice. I felt for Luke and my heart was aching for Theo.
The Danby’s next-door neighbours are non-identical twins, Maddie and Maura Stuart. They run a riding therapy program with donkeys and spent their summers with Theo when he came to stay at his grandparents’ farm. Again, Carter capably captures the awkward meeting between the neighbours meeting again after so long and readers can’t help but get caught up in the development and secrets they hide. The neighbours need each other more than they realize.
You’ll be in awe of Carter’s well-developed and explored connections between twins, a father and son, old flames, a husband and ex-wife, school friends from long ago, people with different abilities, and neighbours.
In addition to connections, I enjoyed an examination of legacy, the connection we have to our birthright and how it affects us, new beginnings, community spirit, romance and how we find it, and the weight of parenting.
Don’t let the easygoing narrative fool you; there’s so much packed into those everyday experiences. Magic can be overlooked. Look for it. There are also more fireworks in Maple Glen than those on the Fourth of July!
This new-to-me author has given me a reason to continue with the ‘Home to Maple Glen’ miniseries.
I was gifted this copy by Harlequin and JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to provide a review.”
About Janice Carter
Writing has been a passion for Janice Carter from a young age but her 'second' career after teaching didn't officially start until she took a romance writing course at a local community college. The story she began then became her debut novel, a Harlequin Intrigue. Janice says she's been very lucky to do what she enjoys most--writing about the connections between people and their families; in other words, how we find love and romance.
