A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man - Unabridged

By James Joyce & Kevin Theis
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man - Unabridged by James Joyce & Kevin Theis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" is the coming-of-age book by James Joyce in which his literary alter-ego - Stephen Dedalus, of Ulysses fame - slowly matures as both a man and a writer, rebelling against his Catholic upbringing and the cultural restrictions his home country of Ireland has placed on him. Eventually Dedalus - like Joyce himself - abandons Ireland for Europe in order to be true to his artistic self.

A sub-genre of literature known as a Künstlerroman, "Portrait" is a modernist story of a young writer trying to find his way in the world and pushing back against the social strictures that are impeding his progress as an artist.

The publication of this book in 1916, along with his short story collection "The Dubliners" which had been released two years earlier, put James Joyce on the literary map. We are proud to present this manuscript in its original and unabridged format.
