Dr Aziz is a young Muslim physician in the British Indian town of Chandrapore. “this had so much going for it, i was SO committed to it, but the ending was so. blegh. i was SAT for the middle of this book, biting my nails while reading, gasping out loud, but the last part just pissed me off tbh”
“I'm so glad I picked this as my bimonthly chopping-block book: it was absolutely incredible to see the ways in which our "civilized" modern society hasn't moved on from occupying countries and territories and exploiting them for gain in the name of progress. A Passage to India still has stereotypes regarding Orientalism and religion—and yet I feel Forster's intent was not meant to harm. He could see the cracks in the British Raj; so can the characters here, and this makes for a fascinating critique, especially considering the unbalanced power dynamics at play. The exoticisation of India as a place rather than recognizing it for its people; commentary on topics such as purdah, the tensions between Muslims and Hindus, and the British fear of "going native"; and the ability to control a narrative when you're the one in power were all explored here. Also, this was just really, really funny despite the subject matter. A final PSA: I another world, in another life, Aziz and Fielding are happily in love.”
