A Madness of Sunshine
ByPublisher Description
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh welcomes you to a remote town on the edge of the world where even the blinding brightness of the sun can’t mask the darkness that lies deep within a killer.…
On the rugged West Coast of New Zealand, Golden Cove is more than just a town where people live. The adults are more than neighbors; the children, more than schoolmates.
That is until one fateful summer—and several vanished bodies—shatters the trust holding Golden Cove together. All that’s left are whispers behind closed doors, broken friendships, and a silent agreement to not look back. But they can’t run from the past forever.
Eight years later, a beautiful young woman disappears without a trace, and the residents of Golden Cove wonder if their home shelters something far more dangerous than an unforgiving landscape.
It’s not long before the dark past collides with the haunting present and deadly secrets come to light.

“Plot: Anahera has come back home to the Golden Cove on the coast of New Zealand, licking her wounds after the end of her marriage (in more ways than one). She finds herself very quickly drawn into the investigation of a beloved local girl, with connections to everyone she knows and cares for. With few leads to go on, the local police, Will, relies on Ana for information and assistance and sometimes a little comfort. But the solution to this mystery won't be straightforward and will rock the foundation of their small town.
Commentary:
Nalini Singh is known for her paranormal and contemporary romances, and I've read all of them, even back to her Harlequin days. But this is a new type of offering - a murder mystery, barely any romance in sight (I said barely - there is a love story and a sex scene, but it is very much in the background and has little bearing on the story - it serves mainly as a way to have two specific characters to talk with one another so that the reader gets some needed information).
I'll say that I really liked this. I was nervous, even though there are quite a few romance authors who have made successful transitions (I don't think that Singh is trying to transition to mystery/thriller exclusively, but it could be done). What I liked more than anything was the setting. I felt like I could see the coast of New Zealand and hear and see the people. That ability to transmit a place isn't always present in a book, especially in genre fiction (no shade, but it's true, especially in murder mysteries, I have found). But I felt the place here. I like the main characters (I felt like it was right on the edge of an ensemble cast, as is sometimes necessary in a plot like this) even as prickly and closed off as they both were. The last chapter was a nice coda that solved their problems (even though I could have seen Will living there comfortably).
I will definitely read Singh's other mysteries.
Also - the narration was top-notch!”
