A Line to Kill

By Anthony Horowitz
A Line to Kill by Anthony Horowitz digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The New York Times bestselling author of the brilliantly inventive The Word Is Murder and The Sentence Is Death returns with his third literary whodunit featuring intrepid detectives Hawthorne and Horowitz.

"Horowitz is a master of misdirection, and his brilliant self-portrayal, wittily self-deprecating, carries the reader through a jolly satire on the publishing world." —Booklist

When Ex-Detective Inspector Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, author Anthony Horowitz, are invited to an exclusive literary festival on Alderney, an idyllic island off the south coast of England, they don’t expect to find themselves in the middle of murder investigation—or to be trapped with a cold-blooded killer in a remote place with a murky, haunted past.

Arriving on Alderney, Hawthorne and Horowitz soon meet the festival’s other guests—an eccentric gathering that includes a bestselling children’s author, a French poet, a TV chef turned cookbook author, a blind psychic, and a war historian—along with a group of ornery locals embroiled in an escalating feud over a disruptive power line.

When a local grandee is found dead under mysterious circumstances, Hawthorne and Horowitz become embroiled in the case. The island is locked down, no one is allowed on or off, and it soon becomes horribly clear that a murderer lurks in their midst. But who?

Both a brilliant satire on the world of books and writers and an immensely enjoyable locked-room mystery, A Line to Kill is a triumph—a riddle of a story full of brilliant misdirection, beautifully set-out clues, and diabolically clever denouements.

A Line to Kill Reviews

3.5
“Horowitz and Hawthorn, back at it again! This time, the duo finds themselves on a small island (with no history of crime) for a book festival, but two murders rock the island and the festival. I felt a bit flat after reading/listening to this one. It seemed that the murderer had been caught, but not by Hawthorn, but then it turns out it was all rubbish and someone else was the killer? I don’t know, this felt rushed and not as satisfying as other reveals. Hopefully we’ll get more info about Hawthorn’s past in the next book too!”
“A Line To Kill, like the rest of the books so far was a fun read, however this particular story was the least interesting. The characters were well done and all unique, but at this stage in the overarching mystery of Hawthorne, there is still very little revealed about him and the end of Derek Abbott’s life was very underwhelming. I know there is more to come so I remain hopeful that more fulfilling development awaits. I also find, unfortunately, Anthony the character to be a bit repetitive, as he doesn’t really get a moment to shine where he interacts with these murders. Even Watson had good moments in Sherlock. It was still a good mystery, and once again, the murderer(s) were just people, good people, who lost themselves in revenge and grief, not villains you could hate.”
