A Hole in The Sky Reviews

“(3/5⭐️)📚 Thank you NetGalley, Angry Robot and Peter F. Hamilton for the eArc of A Hole in the Sky. To my understanding, this book was previously published, and is now republished. Perhaps some changes to the story or rebranding? This is definitely written as a sci-fi ya story. The prose came across very young - it was definitely an easy read with a lot of dialogue. The one thing that didn’t sit well with me, was the constant “oh my dayz” being said by Hazel’s brother. I’m surprised such a phrase has continued to live on 500 plus years in space, where lack of education or knowledge was available prior to the AI John being found. Of all phrases too…I’m just biased against 2010s London slang haha. Atleast he didn’t say “peng”. Overall the concept is interesting, and was executed well but the character depth and development fell short. I wasn’t attached to Hazel or any of the characters, so I didn’t feel necessarily involved with the story as I should be. I’m interested to see how this trilogy progresses though!”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“How I loved this novel! And I’m even happier knowing that this is only book 1 and I’m going to stay in this world with these characters for a while longer! Science fiction is one of my favourite genres, so I leapt at the opportunity to read A Hole in The Sky, especially with that premise. Picture a spaceship that hosts a series of villages where people live like they’re on a planet (with waterfalls, houses, etc.), whilst travelling through space in search of a liveable new one. Not only that, but people are only allowed to live until they’re 65, when they are recycled. I think you already guessed that not everything is as it seems, and Hazel and her friends will just find out how much worse. This story is so dense, in terms of plot, characters arc, twists and action. Even so, the pages fly by, and the reader is ever so captivated as the story gets more and more complicated and mysteries are revealed! I can easily say that I'm in love with Hazel, with her infectious curiosity and determination and her inspiring ambition, teaching us never to settle. I'm very much looking forward to what's next, no actually, I NEED to know what's next! For everyone in need to escape in a fantastic world with unpredictable events, this book is it. Thanks to the author and Angry Robot for a copy and this is my honest opinion.”
“If you hear the words”YA dystopian sci-fi” and just want to read Uglies again for the first time as a teenager, then this might be for you. It's not full of flowery prose, but it's full of detailed descriptions of technology and how it makes the ship run. It's full of humanity just trying to be the best humans they can, and sometimes being the worst. It's full of firefights, running and adventure. The opening setting is post-apocalyptic medieval dystopian on a spaceship and it just gets more chaotic from there. Hazel is stuck in a stagnant pheasant society and wants more adventure in her life, but when she starts to question the social constructs she has to go on the run and she gets more adventure than she wanted. I do think the characters and the romantic aspect could have used more depth, but it's fast paced and engaging. This is easily digestible sci-fi if you're feeling intimidated by hard sci-fi this is a good place to start. It's so much fun and I love it. I'll definitely be waiting for the next installment. Thank you to NetGalley and Angry Robot for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.”
“Thank you to Angry Robot Books for my advanced copy of this first book in a trilogy. Jaw dropping, heart pounding and gripping, this book was everything I wanted and more in a YA sci-fi story. The story kept me engrossed and the world building leapt off the page painting an incredibly vivid picture of life aboard the Daedalus. I loved the suspense that was built up - the tunnels oh my goodness - and the twists that meant the story thrilled me with the turn it took at the end. I haven't been this excited for a sci-fi book since Divergent. The story is fast paced with a wonderful FMC, Hazel, she's young, fallible, determined, naive and curious. I found her extremely likeable and I can't wait to see where her storyline leads. Hazel and her family are just one amongst many living a simple farming life on a spaceship bound for another world. Forced to live the same life as generations before due to restricted technology following a mutiny 500 years ago. Resources are scarce and reaching 65 means you are cycled back into the natural system. This is the way of things and no one is questioning it except a few that fled and hid over the years refusing to be cycled. A captured group of deserters being prepared for cycling advise Hazel at the cycling ceremony to seek the truth. Her life is changed from this moment forward and when someone close to her is threatened with cycling she knows she must act. What she discovers about their life on board will have ramifications across the whole ship.”
