A Good Happy Girl

By Marissa Higgins
A Good Happy Girl by Marissa Higgins digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A poignant, surprising, and immersive read about a young professional woman pursuing an emotionally intense relationship with a married lesbian couple, for readers of Kristen Arnett and Melissa Broder

Helen, a jittery attorney with a self-destructive streak, is secretly reeling from a disturbing crime of neglect that her parents recently committed. Historically happy to compartmentalize—distracting herself by hooking up with lesbian couples, doting on her grandmother, and flirting with a young administrative assistant—Helen finally meets her match with Catherine and Katrina, a married couple who startle and intrigue her with their ever-increasing sexual and emotional intensity.

Perceptive and attentive, Catherine and Katrina prod at Helen’s life, revealing a childhood tragedy she’s been repressing. When her father begs her yet again for help getting parole, she realizes that she has a bargaining chip to get answers to her past.

A Good Happy Girl is interested in worlds without men—and women who will do what they can to get what they want. In her exploration of twisted desires, queer domesticity, and the effects of incarceration on the family, Marissa Higgins offers empathy to characters who often don’t receive it, with unsettling results.

“I have accepted not to be able to read this book back in May when it’s supposed to be the book club pick because it wasn’t available in kindle and pre-ordering it would cost so much. Then I read the first few pages of it as part of the free sample in Fable and I was really intrigued. So, when it went on sale, I bought it. The intrigue and interest did stay with me for all three-quarters of the book but then it just went to the point where I don’t see any growth or change (for the better) happening with the characters, which made me ask what’s the point. There are changes I guess but maybe subtle and made things worse that frustrated me. I know this is fiction, but I also have this belief that in some shape or form, a version of this has or could be happening to someone somewhere. “Fiction is the great lie that tells the truth about how the world lives!” So, it baffles me that some people really think like Helen! I feel bad for her or anyone that go through these thoughts and feelings. The book is written with not much punctuation as per usual that I think did not help in empathising with the characters and just left me sympathising instead. Anyway, it was as okay read but no wow factor.”
“Helen’s parents have been addicts most of her life, in and out of jail with her constantly bailing them out or assisting them when they’re out. When they finally end up in prison for the severe neglect of her grandmother, she’s left reeling. So begins her downward spiral as she begins a relationship as a third to The Wives - Katrina and Catherine. * I feel like I could define this as an example of weird girl smut because”
Expressionless Face“I really wanted to like this one. I really did. This took me months to get through. It was just okay. There were a lot of sentences and images that I found interesting, but overall I was bored and waiting for anything to happen. Something almost happens at the ending, but then it just ends, and ordinarily, I would appreciate this choice, but I was more or less let down by the whole thing. It's a shame because I love messy and I love gross. There are so many aspects to the main character's life that I could resonate with, and I was absolutely certain I would gobble this one up and feel utterly satiated. Instead, I feel starved despite still picking granules out of my teeth. I like the author's voice and there were parts that were delightfully weird. But since the author likes to bully folks who leave negative reviews, it is hard to look forward to whatever she does next, and I will likely skip it.”
