A Flicker in the Dark

By Stacy Willingham
A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A New York Times Bestseller

“A smart, edge-of-your-seat story with plot twists you’ll never see coming. Stacy Willingham’s debut will keep you turning pages long past your bedtime.” —Karin Slaughter

When Chloe Davis was twelve, six teenage girls went missing in her small Louisiana town. By the end of the summer, her own father had confessed to the crimes and was put away for life, leaving Chloe and the rest of her family to grapple with the truth and try to move forward while dealing with the aftermath.

Now twenty years later, Chloe is a psychologist in Baton Rouge and getting ready for her wedding. While she finally has a fragile grasp on the happiness she’s worked so hard to achieve, she sometimes feels as out of control of her own life as the troubled teens who are her patients. So when a local teenage girl goes missing, and then another, that terrifying summer comes crashing back. Is she paranoid, seeing parallels from her past that aren't actually there, or for the second time in her life, is Chloe about to unmask a killer?

From debut author Stacy Willingham comes a masterfully done, lyrical thriller, certain to be the launch of an amazing career. A Flicker in the Dark is eerily compelling to the very last page.

“One summer, when Chloe was twelve years old, six teenage girls went missing from her small hometown in Louisiana. Later that summer, her father is arrested for all of those murders, leaving the rest of the family to crumble. Now, twenty years and a lot of awful press later, Chloe is a psychologist and hopes she has put everything behind her. She has a private practice and a wedding around the corner. Her fiancé is a kind, compassionate man. Things are good. Mostly. She is still very scarred by her childhood and the impact of her father’s conviction. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what is and isn’t real. There is a lot that she still hasn’t told her fiancé. But mostly okay. When teenage girls begin disappearing from where she lives in Baton Rouge, she tries to ignore the alarm she first feels. After all, just because a girl goes missing, it doesn’t mean that it has anything to do with her. And yet she gets sucked in, unsure of whether she is seeing a connection or if it is all in her mind. Oh, this was delightful. A nice twisty thriller. The twists, while not incredibly shocking, were deep enough and plausible enough to work. I would take something where I can sort of guess at the loose threads (but not completely guess the twist) that is realistic over something outlandish and nuts. It is a story of trauma and recovery, and about violence perpetrated against women. It is about safety and where we find it. It is about men who lie and who cheat, not with other women, but in their intentions. And that’s what made it a powerful thriller for me. Would definitely recommend this one.”
“I wanted to really like this, but unfortunately, I figured things out pretty early on. I’m not sure if that’s because I watch a lot of true crime stuff or because of the writing.”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“i thought i had it all figured out, BUT i didnt. i was surprised at the end especially because i just knew who the killer was in my head. a quick read, but enjoyed the book.”
