The stunning, standalone prequel to the New York Times bestselling The Priory of the Orange Tree.

To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hróth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin. Their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow – exactly where she wants to be.
The dragons of the East have slept for centuries. Dumai has spent her life in a Seiikinese mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber. Now someone from her mother's past is coming to upend her fate.
When the Dreadmount erupts, bringing with it an age of terror and violence, these women must find the strength to protect humankind from a devastating threat.
Intricate and epic, Samantha Shannon sweeps readers back to the world of The Priory of the Orange Tree, showing us a course of events that shaped it for generations to come.

“It took me longer than I thought to finish this book, but I also didn't want it to end. I loved this, and I think Samantha Shannon is definitely one of my new favourite authors. I read The Priory first and loved it too, so was intrigued to read this one. As with any good fantasy book, it takes a while to get into the actual plot, and even with knowing the world already, I think as this had a whole new cast of characters, the world was just as rich and diverse, so deserved the world building it had.”

“The prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree. I loved this installment in the Priory story. The prequel follows Glorian Berethnet (Sabran from Priory’s mother) as she becomes Queen and navigates the rise of the High Westerns. We also follow Tunuva, a sister of the Priory who loves her partner’s child deeply and is scarred by the death of her own child. The third narrator is Dumai, a godsinger and Princess, who becomes a dragonrider. The final narrator is Wulfert Glenn, a child of the woods who serves as a guard for Glorian’s father, the King of Hroth. The story is wonderful, and the politics are really well done. This is epic fantasy done very well.”

“Wow, I went into this not realising what I was getting myself into. So much happened plotwise, following multiple characters, and yet it flowed exceedingly well and smoothly.
The characters were diverse, their development well written and some more lovable than others.
My only gripe is that I felt like the book did drag a little, though to be expected from 800+ pages.
Rating: 4.5”
