“**Trigger warning** for self-harm and suicide, described graphically. Reiko's heart is consumed by revenge. Tormented by her classmates and older brother, and betrayed by her first love, she now treads a careful path of hatred. She controls her emotions, fueling the fire of her vengeance. After a family tragedy, she is sent to live with her relatives in Japan. She visits Kuramagi, a historic village preserved to reflect Japanese life during the nineteenth-century Edo period. However, in Kuramagi, history is very much alive, and it calls out to Reiko. She finds herself slipping back in time to 1862, an era when shoguns clashed with supporters of the Emperor. Here, she steps into the life of Miyu, a young woman even angrier than Reiko herself. A woman with the cunning and ruthlessness to achieve the vengeance Reiko craves. Reiko loves escaping into Miyu's life until she discovers Kuramagi's dark secret and must confront Miyu's demons as well as her own. I loved it despite the heavier themes. The story is very well written, and I loved that the background is set in Japan. It's a book that divides opinions—many people liked it, and many did not. In my opinion, it's a book that deserves to be read.”
