Publisher Description

A troubled girl confronts her personal demons in this time-travel thriller alternating between present day and 19th century Japan.

No one knows how to handle Reiko. She is full of hatred; all she can think about is how to best hurt herself and those people closest to her. After a failed suicide attempt at her home in Seattle, Reiko's parents send her to spend the summer with family in Japan, hoping she will learn to control her emotions. But while visiting Kuramagi, a historic village preserved to reflect the nineteenth-century Edo period, Reiko finds herself slipping backward in time into the nineteenth-century life of Miyu, a young woman even more vengeful than Reiko herself. Reiko loves escaping into Miyu's life . . . until she discovers Kuramagi's dark secret and must face down Miyu's demons as well as her own.

“**Trigger warning** for self-harm and suicide, described graphically. Reiko's heart is consumed by revenge. Tormented by her classmates and older brother, and betrayed by her first love, she now treads a careful path of hatred. She controls her emotions, fueling the fire of her vengeance. After a family tragedy, she is sent to live with her relatives in Japan. She visits Kuramagi, a historic village preserved to reflect Japanese life during the nineteenth-century Edo period. However, in Kuramagi, history is very much alive, and it calls out to Reiko. She finds herself slipping back in time to 1862, an era when shoguns clashed with supporters of the Emperor. Here, she steps into the life of Miyu, a young woman even angrier than Reiko herself. A woman with the cunning and ruthlessness to achieve the vengeance Reiko craves. Reiko loves escaping into Miyu's life until she discovers Kuramagi's dark secret and must confront Miyu's demons as well as her own. I loved it despite the heavier themes. The story is very well written, and I loved that the background is set in Japan. It's a book that divides opinions—many people liked it, and many did not. In my opinion, it's a book that deserves to be read.”
“A melodramatic, hate fueled teenager plotting her revenge. For 250 pages I read about her violent imaginings for how “they” would all pay. For 250 pages she starved herself, cut herself, brooded, ignored the people around her (if they wanted a positive interaction) and plotted the demise of everyone around her (some, simply for the crime of being a bit self-absorbed and tired of her shit). Hello!!!! WHO is self absorbed here???? I was really tired of her shit myself by about page 15. In the last 5 pages she suddenly figures out that she’s actually responsible for her own actions (shocking!) and turns it around. But seriously, too little too late in my opinion. The best part of this was time travel to Edo era Japan. That’s seemed fairly well researched. And interesting. But it was full of hate-fueled-revenge as well so... sigh .... I got really tired of all that rage.”
“So, I would've LOVED this if it was longer? Like, I REALLY REALLY liked it, it just wasn't quite as long as I wanted it to be. I didn't get to know the characters quite as well as I would've liked and the ending is a little rushed. I absolutely loved Reiko though! I just couldn't help but want MORE.”
