Publisher Description

A Darker Shade of Magic, from #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Antarimagicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in ArnesRed Londonand officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

"A Darker Shade of Magic has all the hallmarks of a classic work of fantasy. Schwab has given us a gem of a tale...This is a book to treasure."—Deborah Harkeness, New York Times bestselling author of the All Souls trilogy

Slightly Smiling Face“I really enjoyed this book! Addie LaRue is one of my all time faves so I had really high hopes - I really enjoy the writing style and definitely am keen to read the rest of the series 😍”

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“Both the writing and the world are amazing! I want to live in red London. And the characters are all rich and unique! I found myself relating very deeply to kel and lira especially. Swab is so good at describing the things people feel but never know how to articulate. My only complaint is that I had time keeping track of what the magic can and can’t do. Definitely looking forward to the next ones!”

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“I waited to read this book, perhaps too long. It was fantastic! As usual with V.E. Schwab, her writing style is so elegant and full of life. Loved the characters, they are so well-thought and smart.”

Thumbs Up“I was a little worried when they introduced Lila. Her motivations and background are stereotypical and I thought this might be another run of the mill magic fantasy book. To my surprise the character is very well written and fun despite the lack of depth. I found myself really enjoying the book and loving all the boss fights.”

Slightly Smiling Face“A Darker Shade of Magic hooked me from the very beginning. Schwab’s writing is as beautiful and readable as always. I loved the characters, world building, and magic system. I can’t wait to continue this series!”
