“I really appreciate how well Marillier writes stories with mid-to-lower stakes. This was a slightly smaller story than its predecessor (though it does sow important seeds for the third entry) but allowed more character to shine through. Liobhan and Dau got to work out their intertwined character arcs a bit more — really, this is Dau’s story more than anyone’s, though Brocc undoubtedly faces the highest stakes. Brocc’s uncertainty in the life he chose at the end of Harp of Kings is a unique development regarding the tropes his plot normally inhabits. I liked seeing them all grow a bit more, take different chances. The losses are keenly felt, the victories earned. The ending did feel slightly underwhelming, but there’s one more book to go so I’ll see how it turns out!”
