Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“Brimming with Christmas cheer; “Bits” and “The Boy with the Box” were the particular highlights to me of new stories, “A Christmas Carol”, of course, already being in that category, as they sparkled with snow and cozy atmosphere. 😊”
“Collection of stories all pertaining to Christmas interspersed with a few well known Christmas carols. Most worked for me and I would definitely read this collection again. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can never read this one too many times. Has been a bookshelf essential of mine for years. The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Adorable short story about getting the perfect gift for a loved one. Will definitely read again Christmas at Melrose by Leslie Pinckney Hill ⭐⭐⭐ I don't read much poetry, but I didn't mind this little Christmas poem. Might read it again. 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ At this point, who doesn't know this one? A bookshelf AND Christmas essential for many I'm sure. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by Ernst T. A. Hoffman ⭐⭐⭐⭐ My knowledge of this story has always been through the ballet, which I first saw close to 30 years ago, so I was interested to read the original story. I'll be honest: I like the ballet better, but I'd definitely read this again. Babouscka by Bailey and Lewis ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Short, but rather bleak story. I think there was a lesson in there about missed opportunities, but yeesh, was it harshly learned! Might read this again. Bits by Helen G. Ricks ⭐⭐ This one unfortunately did not work for me at all. Prose or writing style? I'm not sure, but I found it hard to follow and am still not entirely sure what transpired. Not likely to read again. Little Piccola by Frances Jenkins Olcott ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Another adorable story, this one about cultural and class differences at Christmas. Will definitely read again. The Fir Tree by Hans Christian Anderson ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The author's name alone sent me into this with high expectations and Mr. Anderson did not disappoint. His ability to craft a story about focusing on the here-and-now and finding joy in the moment using a tree of all things as his main character, shows why his works have lasted through the ages. Will definitely read again. The Boy with the Box by Mary Griggs van Voorhis ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Heartwarming story about counting your blessings and being kind to your neighbor. Will definitely read again.”

Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) initially strove to be a theater actor but when his soprano voice started changing in his teens, he was encouraged to be a poet instead. Today, the Danish writer is most well-known for his literary fairy tales—156 published throughout his lifetime.
