A Betrayal in Winter

By Daniel Abraham
A Betrayal in Winter by Daniel Abraham digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Daniel Abraham delighted fantasy readers with his brilliant, original, and engaging first novel, A Shadow in Summer. Now he has produced an even more powerful sequel, a tragedy as darkly personal and violent as Shakespeare's Macbeth.

As a boy, Otah Machi was exiled from his family, Machi's ruling house. Decades later, he has witnessed and been part of world-changing events. Yet he has never returned to Machi. Now his father--the Khai, or ruler, of Machi--is dying and his eldest brother Biitrah has been assassinated, Otah realizes that he must return to Machi, for reasons not even he understands.

Tradition dictates that the sons of a dying Khai fall upon each other until only one remains to succeed his father. But something even worse is occurring in Machi. The Galts, an expansive empire, has allied with someone in Machi to bring down the ruling house. Otah is accused, the long-missing brother with an all-too-obvious motive for murder.

With the subtlety and wonderful storytelling skill of his first novel, Abraham has created a masterful drama filled with a unique magic, a suspenseful thriller of sexual betrayal, and Machiavellian politics.

Thumbs Up“This was really good, and an improved follow-up to Abraham’s debut. Whereas the first book’s plot didn’t click for me as much in the second half, this one was compelling all the way through. He does something interesting in that this book is centered on all these political machinations and a secret plot for power, yet because we get POVs on both sides, we know more than the characters basically from the outset of the story. So while the mystery itself isn’t what drives the story for the reader, it’s watching the characters on both sides work to either execute or uncover the plot. While the end was maybe slightly underwhelming, it still felt very satisfying and there weren’t any choices made purely for shock appeal. It felt true to the characters and the story in how it played out, and left me wondering what the next half of this series will be about. I liked the mix of old and new characters for this second book, and I definitely find the characters to be one of Abraham’s strengths so far. They aren’t bland or all the same, as they are all well crafted individuals with different motivations and qualities. And once again this series is set up to I’d assume follow some mix of old and new in the next book. So I look forward to that. Overall this was another good experience, and I thought the pacing was quite excellent. This was an easy book to pick up and always remained interesting when I did. Excited to check out more of Abraham’s work, both in this series and his others.”
“Enjoyed reading this next season of the story. It went in a direction I wasn’t expecting yet - I was surprised at the timing of the events so I’m all in for where it goes next. Not as fast of a read as the first and felt like a bit of a slog in the middle for a bit but I’m glad I stuck with it.”
