“🚨 SPOILER WARNING 🚨
This review contains spoilers for 25 Days by Per Jacobson. Scroll with caution.
I just finished 25 Days, and I’m sitting in that uncomfortable middle space where I liked it… but also had issues with it.
First, the positives. I genuinely enjoyed Jacobson’s writing style. It’s tense, atmospheric, and easy to sink into. The story kept me turning pages, and the horror elements absolutely deliver. Fair warning, this book does not hold back. There are some very graphic and disturbing scenes, so definitely check content warnings before diving in.
Now for the mixed feelings.
There were quite a few plot holes and unanswered questions that pulled me out of the story. The family makes some choices that felt either frustrating or unrealistic. They’re sleeping outside in freezing temperatures with barely any consequences. They somehow pack and carry enough food to last days without it being an issue. The killer always comes at night, yet everyone just… sleeps? No watch, no shifts, nothing.
My biggest issue, though, was the lack of explanation. We never really get a clear who or why behind what’s happening. I understand that in the afterword Jacobson explains why the killer was left unnamed, and I respect the artistic choice. But for me, that ambiguity ultimately took away from my overall enjoyment. I wanted just a little more grounding or payoff after all that tension.
That said, even though this was a slight miss for me, I’m still interested in reading his other books. The talent is absolutely there, and I think this one just didn’t fully land for my personal taste.
