What’s the best love story you’ve ever read?

jason question
A few weeks ago, my fellow Fable editors and I were discussing our favorite love stories. When I was a younger reader, Haruki Murakami’s “South of the Border, West of the Sun” hypnotized me. It is not a happy love story, but it has stuck with me for many years. There’s something about the quiet and dreamy way that the story unfolds, I’ve always kept close on my bookshelf. My colleagues shared their top love stories, but I want to see yours in the comments!Cameron Capello: As a certified lover girl, it’s difficult to answer this question and not immediately remember 50 other love stories that are equally incredible. As of right now, I’m deeply enjoying Sally Rooney’s “Intermezzo” which tells the story of five Irish people dealing with the in-between moments of their lives, navigating the space between relationships, between choices, and sometimes between being truly known or totally misunderstood. It’s beautiful and poetic - I highly recommend! Hayley Dennings: “Seven Days In June” will always be my favorite romance book. It’s a story of second chances and true soulmates persevering despite unfair external circumstances trying to thwart them at every turn. I loved reading about a black woman being loved unconditionally and this book will always make me emotional because of it.Ellen Savage: I fell in love with love when reading Elizabeth Gaskell’s “North and South”. This criminally underrated classic set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution tells the story of two people struggling to find their place in an ever changing world. Gaskell tells us a beautiful love story, but she also asks us to look outside ourselves, to be aware of the struggles of those around us, and urges us to question societal norms and tradition in order to create a better world.
