The health and wellness benefits of summer reading

Millions of people around the world will visit the beach this summer, and everybody should pack a book to read.Beyond just fun in the sun, beach days deliver a whole host of wellness advantages. Dr. Heidi Hanna, the director of education for the American Institute of Stress, calls this the “beach brain” phenomenon. In her work as a neuroscientist, she researched how the seaside experience includes a wellness boost for your brain and body. She explained:

"The synergistic impact comes from both the reduction of stress and the increase in feelings of calm … these micro shifts of going to the beach can be brain health protective."

Summer reading can change your life

We already know that reading books for just 30 minutes a day can make you happier and healthier, and help you live longer. When you combine the benefits of reading books with the benefits of the beach, you get a powerful wellness combination!Your beach read book could help you treat the people in your work and home life better. Beyond the wellness boost from "beach brain," books also increase your empathy and emotional intelligence.According to Keith Oatley, a professor emeritus of cognitive psychology at the University of Toronto, reading books also improves your capacity for empathy and imagination, like a "flight simulator" for your brain:

In other words, he says, 'fiction allows us to live many lives,’ and to experience more human interactions than are otherwise possible. As a result, he says, fiction readers may not only learn more, they may develop better social skills and more humane ways of thinking.”
